After graduating in Applied Biology in 1984, Kam-Wah Mak worked for 6 years at the Regional Immunology Centre [Newcastle on Tyne] as Medical Scientist on humoral and cellular immunology. After graduating a second time in 1993; this time in Physiotherapy, he gained wide experience in the musculoskeletal field at several NHS hospitals in the North of England. He became employed in private practice for a short spell in 1997 where some of his time was spent treating professional athletes.
Kam has been an Acupuncture practitioner for a number of years and is the holder of Postgraduate Diploma in Acupuncture gained in 1996. In parallel to the Acupuncture study he also attended Sunderland University on a recognised two year part-time teacher training, which ultimately led to a Certificate in Education awarded in 1996. He then moved into full-time higher education employment for the next five years, lecturing in the BSc. Physiotherapy programme first at University of Teesside and then as a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. After leaving full time higher education in 2002, he worked part time for two years as a clinical specialist in the musculoskeletal field in a leading NHS hospital and in his spare time, he delivers postgraduate training in Acupuncture and related topics throughout the UK.
Kam has diverse interests in clinical practice and is currently combining Acupuncture and Tui Na (Chinese Medical Massage and Manipulation) with views of integrating these modalities into his mainstream physiotherapy practice. He also finds time after leaving the NHS for the second time in 2004 to develop his multi-disciplined private practice with clinical loads primarily in the area of complementary therapy and secondly in the fields of musculoskeletal and sport medicine.
Through his busy work schedule, Kam also find time to set up Acupuncture Training Associates (ATA) in early 1997 with an experienced team of clinicians, educator and academic researchers in Acupuncture. Since 1997, ATA has run numerous courses and is at the forefront of educational and research initiatives with a long experience in the delivery of up-to-date, practical Acupuncture education throughout the UK and beyond.
Kam's professional interests lie mainly in the treatment of spinal pain, occupational / sports related injuries and complex soft tissue injuries. He is also fascinated with the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Life Long Learning (LLL) of Acupuncture practitioners and musculoskeletal physiotherapists in the British Isles.
Away from his professional interests, Kam is a keen caravan enthusiast and is determined to get away as much as he can with his beloved caravan. He is also known in his local community as hospitable (generous with his whiskey collection) and has a reputation for his catering skills especially his hog roast / summer parties are simply legendary.
